The reasons for detaining Uyghurs in Xinjiang are based less on clear violations of the law than on the suspicion and arbitrariness of Chinese security forces. This is revealed by a list from the Chinese police with more than 10,000 names of detainees, obtained by Uyghur exile groups from Xinjiang. News agency AFP gained insight into the list and reports of vaguely formulated arrest reasons. These include „gathering a crowd to disturb social order,“ „promoting extremism“ or „provoking quarrels and stirring up troubles“.
