Zhang Jun, China’s ambassador to the United Nations, took over the chairmanship of the UN Security Council in May by rotation. Zhang, 60, has been China’s representative in New York since 2019. At the start of China’s UN presidency, Zhang spoke out against sanctions on Myanmar. He fears that this will only worsen the humanitarian situation and sees above all the association of Southeast Asian states Asean as responsible. Zhang also advocates an end to the sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran. To save the nuclear agreement with Iran, Germany, Great Britain, and France, together with Russia and China, are trying to mediate between the US and Iran. The chairmanship of the Security Council changes monthly.
