A video of the visibly enraged passenger immediately went viral on China’s social media. Videos from Wuhan and Beijing also soon circulated, showing the clash of generations on the subway. These incidents sparked heated discussions in China, a country where respect for the elderly is traditionally held in high regard. In an online survey conducted by Sina News, over 93 percent of respondents said they did not feel obliged to give up their seats. They said that China’s young population is so overworked that it should be up to each person to decide whether they still have the strength to offer their seat out of politeness.
