Hong Kong once had the freest press in East Asia. However, since the Hong Kong government enacted the National Security Act virtually overnight in July 2020, Hong Kong’s press landscape has become increasingly similar to that of the censored mainland. Around a dozen media outlets have had to shut down in the last three years. Individual journalists are openly on Beijing’s hit list.
