In China, the death of former top politicians traditionally causes nervousness in the government district of Beijing. This is because, as recent history shows, expressions of mourning by many Chinese often serve as an outlet to express their displeasure with political conditions. Such was the case in 1976, when then Premier Zhou Enlai died. Or when the former general secretary and reformer Hu Yaobang was mourned in 1987. And when former President Jiang Zemin died a year ago, the authorities were also nervous.
