The Winter Olympics in Beijing are a great stage for China to present itself to the world as a progressive nation. Those responsible have also discovered the topic of sustainability. They are advertising with green games. But already with the artificial snow it becomes clear: This sports festival was painted green at best. The electricity for the snow cannons may still come from renewable sources. But the immense water consumption can hardly be offset. Sustainability was not a priority in the construction of the Olympic ski jump either, as Hans-Martin Renn explains in an interview. The architect from the Allgäu region of Germany helped design the Olympic ski jump in the host city of Zhangjiakou.
