Today, even the Olympic Games can no longer avoid the issue of sustainability. The organizers in Beijing are emphasizing the climate neutrality of the Winter Games at every turn. All competition venues will be powered by renewable energies, and every passenger vehicle will run on either hydrogen, gas or electricity. But the measures for more sustainability are only convincing at first glance, explains Marcel Grzanna. Above all, the water required for the masses of artificial snow is problematic. How sustainable the Games are remains difficult to determine – because the host cities are ultimately allowed to draw up their own sustainability accounts as they see fit.
