Dear reader,

Carrie Lam fears it’s an election and no one is going . Hong Kong citizens apparently see so little point in voting under Beijing rules that they prefer to stay home. Chief administrator Lam is trying all kinds of incentives to lure people to the polls. In any case, the opposition in exile advises against voting because only compliant candidates are on the ballot. This makes the event a farce, analyses Marcel Grzanna. Nevertheless, the city deploys thousands of police officers to protect the election. What is striking about this is that in more democratic times the heightened surveillance of voters was unnecessary.
