But for European companies operating in China, the ongoing trade tensions remain a burden. More pressing, however, are concerns over the sluggish state of China’s domestic economy.

Internally, Beijing has recently cast itself as the winner of the US-China trade spat. The temporary suspension of most Trump-era tariffs by a US court was gleefully reported by Chinese state outlets. „Is Trump’s tariff war over?“ ran a headline by Xinhua News Agency. Even though a US appeals court reinstated the tariffs just hours later, the narrative in Beijing remained unchanged: China is standing strong amid global hostility.
