The ASEAN and GCC states meet with China at a joint summit for the first time. They aim to create an economic counterweight to the West. Given the complicated diplomatic relations, observers are skeptical as to whether any concrete results will be achieved. However, the focus is on something else anyway.

A veritable summit marathon is currently taking place in Kuala Lumpur: The 46th ASEAN Summit, the second summit between ASEAN countries and states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) – and a new trilateral format between ASEAN, GCC and China.
