Spain takes over EU Council presidency

Pedro Sanchez: Spain’s prime minister could soon be voted out of office.

Spain takes over the presidency of the EU Council on Sunday. The left-wing government led by Pedro Sánchez was seen as a door opener to China. Now, however, elections will be held at the end of July – and Sánchez could lose his post. Two important EU initiatives in particular are at the top of the Spanish agenda over the next six months.

Spain will take over the EU Council presidency from Sweden on July 1. As in the past six months, the Russian aggression against Ukraine will dominate the agenda of the upcoming presidency, keeping an eye on China and its relationship with Moscow.
