Last Thursday, the European Commission presented the first results of its new import monitoring instrument. Announced in April, the tool tracks the development of imports into the EU. The goal: to detect early when goods from China and other countries are being redirected to the EU market due to the trade conflict with the US, rather than ending up in third-country markets. To identify such trends and implement safeguards if necessary, the Commission analyzes trade statistics across product categories that meet three cumulative criteria:
