Renata Alt grew up behind the Iron Curtain in the former Czechoslovakia and experienced the consequences of authoritarian rule as a child. Today, the FDP politician advocates for civil and human rights in the German Bundestag. This is sometimes a balancing act.

Suddenly, her relatives were gone – fled to Canada, far away from then-Czechoslovakia. Renata Alt was still a toddler in the late 1960s. However, the flight of her great-aunt and daughters in the wake of the Prague Spring shaped her own life path.
