According to a report in the Financial Times (FT), Chinese state broadcaster CGTN has approached the French media regulator to obtain a broadcasting license. A few weeks ago, the UK regulator (Ofcom) revoked CGTN’s European broadcasting license after concluding that the Chinese Communist Party controlled the channel editorially. As research by China.Table showed it is unclear whether CGTN still has a valid broadcasting license in Europe, as a result of Ofcom’s decision. Within the EU, a broadcaster from a third country only needs to show a valid license from one member state, which is then valid in all member states. Vodafone had stopped the broadcasting of CGTN in Germany.
