China wants to build new coal-fired power plants until 2027 in order to compensate for fluctuations in renewable energies. This was announced by the National Development and Reform Commission in an action plan published on Monday. According to the plan, the new power plants should be able to be ramped up and down quickly in order to compensate for short-term peaks in demand. Existing coal-fired power plants are barely able to do this. It is still unclear how China intends to achieve the rapid changes.
