The space mission SVOM (Space-based Multi-band Astronomical Variable Objects Monitor) has officially entered scientific operation following the successful completion of its test phase. SVOM is a joint project of the French space agency CNES and the Chinese space agency CNSA. The goal of the mission is to study gamma-ray bursts – extremely high-energy cosmic phenomena that occur when neutron stars collide or when massive stars collapse.
