Relations between Beijing and the Vatican have historically been challenging. To this day, there are no regular diplomatic relations between the leadership of the Catholic Church and the People’s Republic of China. However, a rapprochement may be imminent, much to Taiwan’s dismay.

China appears willing to engage in direct dialogue with the Vatican. „We are ready to work with the Vatican to promote the continuous improvement of relations between China and the Vatican,“ said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin.
