For Xi Jinping’s generation, and many Chinese over 50, the China-Vietnam War stands as the biggest armed conflict involving China in their living memory. Internationally regarded as an invasion by China, it is officially referred to in China as the „Self-Defense Counterattack Against Vietnam“. The war lasted about a month in early 1979, but skirmishes along the border continued well into the 1980s.
