Not every supposed China expert actually has China expertise. But how can an often under-informed public judge who really has this expertise? China expertise also ultimately remains an attribution and also creates hierarchies: Sinologists and expats in China are considered competent, while the voices of Chinese dissidents, Tibetans or Uyghurs are often ignored.
