Wang Dan was the most prominent leader in the 1989 student movement in Beijing, which ended in the Tiananmen Square massacre. At the time, Wang was a 20-year-old student at Peking University. He was released from prison in 1998 as a result of international advocacy and US diplomatic pressure. Since then, he has remained an outspoken advocate for political change in China and a leading figure among overseas Chinese dissidents.
