The new German government wants to take a firmer stance in its dealings with China – and that’s long overdue. But a parliamentary expert commission alone won’t cut it. What’s needed are confidential analyses, smart incentives for companies and clear responses to unfair competition.

The new German government must improve on the China policy of the previous coalition. While that coalition did adopt a solid strategy toward China, it seriously lacked consistent follow-through. The new coalition agreement includes good starting points, but falls short in critical areas.
