In China, the color green doesn’t always get you off on the right foot. Newcomers to China, for example, who show up in the Middle Kingdom with green headgear and possibly get one or two stupid comments for it, are likely to be annoyed. Of course, China insiders can only smile wearily. It has long been known that the very figurative saying 被戴绿帽子 bèi dài lǜ màozi „getting a green hat“ in China is synonymous with „being cheated on by your partner„. This is said to go back to a folk story in which a merchant would put on a green hat when he went on a trip. This served as an indication to his wife’s lover that there was a clear path. China’s net community has now made the saying even more catchy for the 21st century. In China today, people are „greened“ (被绿了 bèi lǜ le), while here they are „cuckolded“.
