Exhausted and worn out? Stomach upset? Migraine attack? Catching a cold? Home office hangover? Or just all too much? Drink more warm water! At least that’s what you’ll be advised to do in China whenever the subject of minor aches and pains and sudden physical discomfort comes up. Warm or boiled water – in Chinese 热水 rèshuǐ or 白开水 báikāishuǐ – is considered by many Chinese to be an effective immediate remedy and the best prevention for various malaises. The well-intentioned advice 多喝热水 duō hē rèshuǐ has therefore become a catchphrase in the Middle Kingdom, and has even become an Internet meme.
