Some facial expressions say more than a thousand words. A smile creates a good mood and positive reactions in East and West alike. But what does it look like when facial expressions are transferred to the digital world in the form of emoticons or emojis? Whether it’s WhatsApp or WeChat, Europeans and Chinese alike enjoy using digital „smileys“, in Chinese表情符号biǎoqíng fúhào (literally „facial expressions“) or emojis. „facial expression signs“) or 表情贴纸 biǎoqíng tiēzhǐ („facial expression stickers“), or in slang simply 表情 biǎoqíng. But even with digital mimicry, there are actually some cultural differences to consider. Or would you know what it means if a Chinese interlocutor sends you an emoticon eating watermelon with relish? Or a pig’s head? Let alone a dancing penguin or – oh God – the hand sign for the number 6 in a devilishly triple version „666“?
