The US climate czar presented an initiative for a carbon offset plan for companies – but it clashes with new UN anti-greenwashing proposals. Kerry’s intention is to use it to mobilize private funds for the energy transition and climate adaptation in the Global South. Sounds good – but there is a real risk that companies will simply buy their way out of their climate obligations, reports Bernhard Poetter.
