Since the 2021 G7 energy ministers meeting in the UK, diplomats have struggled to find the right wording concerning fossil fuels. At COP26 in Glasgow in the same year, when the decision was made to reduce unabated coal-fired power generation, the terms also found their way into the UN climate negotiations.
