Mark Carney’s election victory in Canada prevents a further setback for climate policy and means the country will likely stay on its course. After all, a victory for the Conservative candidate Pierre Poilievre would probably have led to rising CO2 emissions. However, Canada is a long way from the 1.5 degree path and Carney faces significant hurdles: He will probably only govern with a minority government and some provinces try to slow down climate action efforts.
