COP27: NGOs complain about repression

The criticism of COP27 host Egypt from civil society is mounting. High prices, surveillance and further repression prevent activists and NGOs from doing their work. While the conference is still underway, a human rights activist who has been imprisoned for many years faces death.

Without civil society, there would have been no Paris Agreement, said Jennifer Morgan, State Secretary at the German Foreign Office, on Tuesday on the sidelines of an event in the German pavilion at COP27. But that very civil society is taking a beating in Sharm el-Sheikh.
