Difficult energy transition in Colombia

On his South American trip, Germany’s Economy Minister Robert Habeck also discussed green hydrogen and energy partnerships with Colombia. But the country is struggling with the direction and timeframe for its energy transition. Currently, oil, coal and gas still generate high government revenues. Now there is talk about whether green hydrogen can replace them.

Colombia’s energy transition is no easy feat. Colombia’s Finance Minister José Antonio Ocampo said last July: „We have to look for more gas. (…) Self-sufficiency is a clear goal, we even have to keep exporting oil, otherwise, we’ll have an unmanageable problem with the balance of payments.“
