Fact check: Merz’s plan to quickly build CCS gas-fired power plants is hardly realistic

According to the coalition contract of the new German government, the Christian Democrats and Social Democrats plan to build up to 20 gigawatts of new gas-fired power plants by 2030. In an interview with the German business newspaper Handelsblatt, Friedrich Merz has now specified that these power plants are to be built „quickly using CCS technology“, i.e., the capture and storage of CO2. This is a departure from the course of the previous German government, which also considered new gas-fired power plants necessary but wanted to ensure their climate compatibility by later converting them to hydrogen. The fact check shows: There is not a single commercial CCS gas-fired power plant in the world, as the technology is untested and very expensive.
