Climate Action Minister Carsten Schneider: Just in office, already facing major challenges.

This Thursday, Germany’s expert commission will present its new forecast on the progress towards the country’s climate target. Regardless of this, it is clear that the new Climate Minister Carsten Schneider faces major challenges. This is because the Climate Change Act requires him to present a climate action program within one year, one that also defines sector targets and measures leading up to 2040.

This Thursday is an important date for German climate policy: Two months after the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) presented the 2025 emissions data and its forecast for meeting the statutory CO2 budget, the Council of Experts on Climate Change will present its review report on whether the climate target for 2030 can be met. If this is again not the case, the ministries responsible for the affected sectors must propose measures within three months to ensure the targets can be met, after all.
