The phase-out of hard coal and lignite is progressing rapidly in the traditional coal country of Poland. Old and expensive power plants are being taken off the grid while renewables are growing rapidly. Experts call for coal to be phased out by 2035, even before the German 2038 deadline. However, Donald Tusk’s government has yet to present a plan for the energy transition. It fears protests against the closure of coal mines and plans high subsidies for coal and soon for the first nuclear power plant.
