In the future, energy demand in the building sector will continue to rise – primarily due to a greater need for cooling.

In 2023, global growth in the building sector was decoupled from the sector’s greenhouse gas emissions for the first time – these reached a plateau. Between 2015 and 2023, energy intensity in the sector fell significantly by 9.5%, but also fell well short of the target of an 18.2% reduction. The share of renewables in the sector increased by 4.5 percent. Despite some progress, the sector is therefore not on track to comply with the Paris Climate Agreement and achieve climate neutrality by 2050. This is the conclusion of a recent report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
