China builds fewer and fewer coal-fired power plants.

China only approved 11.29 gigawatts (GW) of new coal-fired power plant capacity in the first quarter of the year. With new approvals for coal-fired power plants already down to 62.24 GW in 2024 compared to the previous year, Greenpeace East Asia is confident that the expansion of coal power in the People’s Republic will come to a halt. The energy sector is „on track to reach peak carbon emissions this year,“ Greenpeace comments.
