Over a fifth of the world’s oceans have become darker over the past two decades – with drastic consequences for biodiversity. A study by the British University of Plymouth cites climate change as one of the reasons for the darker seas. Algal blooms, warming sea surfaces and changes in global ocean circulation, as well as organic material and sediments near the coasts, are changing the color of the oceans. An area the size of the Indian Ocean is affected. It is „one of the largest losses of habitat on the planet,“ which requires further investigation.
