CO₂ could be permanently stored in and through the North Sea. Scientists have investigated ten methods, but warn against expecting too much.

According to the CDRmare research mission, the options for storing CO₂ in the North Sea and Baltic Sea and increasing the natural CO₂ uptake of both seas are „limited to a few methods.“ In a study, scientists from the German Marine Research Alliance examined ten different methods for storing CO₂. They analyzed the availability of material, energy, land and sea area as well as the infrastructure and technical controllability of CO₂ storage.
