Green methanol can play a key role as an alternative fuel on the road to climate-neutral shipping. According to a study conducted by the Institute of Maritime Energy Systems at the German Aerospace Center on behalf of the environmental organization Greenpeace, switching to this fuel could reduce CO₂ emissions by 96 percent over the entire life cycle of ships. The meeting of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Environmental Committee began in London on Monday. The United Nations’ specialized agency of 176 states wants to decide there which measures will be used to implement the greenhouse gas strategy adopted in 2023, according to which shipping is to become climate-neutral by 2050.
