Global energy demand rose significantly in 2024 – primarily due to the demand for electricity, which increased by 4.3% compared to the previous year. This growth is almost twice as high as the average of the past ten years. However, with a growth of 2.2%, the increase in demand for energy was below global economic growth of 3.2%. In addition, growth is becoming increasingly decoupled from CO₂ emissions, which only rose by 0.8% last year. This is according to the Global Energy Review 2025 published by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
