So far, many large companies from CO2-intensive sectors have received free carbon credits. The environmental organization WWF has called for this allocation to be restricted sooner than planned.

Industrial sectors such as steel, cement and chemicals received more free carbon credits from the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) in 2023 than they needed. As a result, the EU has lost 40 billion euros in revenue, criticizes the environmental organization WWF in a joint report with the think tank CarbonWatch published on Tuesday.
