Only 18 days until the election of the new Bundestag. The poll ratings of the incumbent chancellor’s party are very low, and on his way to Paris, campaigner Armin Laschet is hearing barely concealed criticism from his own ranks and mockery from Bavaria. Laschet wanted to talk to French President Emmanuel Macron about his plans for Europe, and, in the style of a global politician, he sent a guest article (in the Handelsblatt) with statements to Paris in advance. But the chances are dwindling that the candidate will become a chancellor who will implement his European policy goals.
