On paper, China’s new data protection law is very reminiscent of the EU model, the General Data Protection Regulation. In practice, the PIPL law will likely make life more difficult for European companies in the People’s Republic, analyzes Falk Steiner: They have to comply with new regulations, but data transfer with European headquarters is hardly made easier. The shortcomings of the rule of law in China prevent the EU Commission and the European Court of Justice from recognizing the rules.
