After ECJ ruling: Brussels hesitates

Poland and Hungary have lost in court in the dispute over the new rule of law mechanism. Budapest in particular is now threatened with financial sanctions. However, it remains to be seen whether the EU Commission will initiate proceedings before the country’s parliamentary elections. There has been sharp criticism from the European Parliament.

The EU Commission will not take action against Hungary or Poland in the short term following the ruling of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) on the rule of law mechanism. Before taking action against violations of the rule of law, it could still take „weeks,“ said a spokeswoman in Brussels. She did not want to commit to a date.
