The Federal Ministry of Justice is still examining the grounds for the ruling, but has already announced a draft bill for an EU-compliant law in the near future. Nevertheless, data protection experts and coalition partners see a need for discussion.

Unsurprisingly, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) confirmed in its ruling on Tuesday that EU law precludes the general and indiscriminate retention of traffic and location data of its citizens. The ECJ is thus adhering to its previous case law.
