Ursula von der Leyen, António Costa and Keir Starmer want to set the tone today for a new beginning in relations between the EU and the UK. At the first EU-UK summit since Brexit, both sides want to adopt three documents in London: a security and defense agreement, a memorandum of understanding on future cooperation and a final declaration. Just how difficult the rapprochement is is shown by the fact that the EU ambassadors yesterday had to tweak the texts during the day and in the evening. It is an attempt at rapprochement five years after the UK’s exit from the EU and against the backdrop of the changed geopolitical situation since Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
