Josep BORRELL FONTELLES (High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy) — EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell exchanged views with the foreign ministers of the member states via video link on Tuesday. He wants to ask his team to prepare for further sanctions against Iran.

Economic policy was actually supposed to be the focus of the special summit. Now the meeting of heads of state and government is being overshadowed by the situation in the Middle East. The agenda includes new sanctions against Iran.

According to diplomats, the EU will condemn Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel at the special summit in Brussels and at the same time call on all players to avoid further escalation. Possible new sanctions against Tehran are also on the agenda of the two-day meeting, which begins today, Wednesday.
