Bernd Lange has been Chairman of the Committee on International Trade in the European Parliament since 2014. Here, the 65-year-old also has the goals of the Green Deal in mind. His personal conviction: „The key is to make people come along and give them a perspective on life, rather than being purely confrontational.“ Lange criticizes the narrow European perspective regarding the recently adopted „Fit for 55“ package of measures. The EU Commission wants to make importing goods produced in a way that is harmful to the climate more expensive; a kind of climate tariff (CBAM) is to be introduced. Lange finds this problematic: „Of course, you have to keep a sense of proportion, especially towards developing countries, so that they are not excluded from trade.“
