Green steel: German standard could make scrap recycling more difficult

A study published on Monday by the think tank Epico Klimainnovation on the occasion of the German government’s „Steel Summit“ criticizes the German „Low-emission Steel Standard“ (LESS). There is a risk of greenwashing, as LESS disadvantages the particularly low-CO2 steel production from scrap and obscures the actual CO2 emissions of production from newly mined iron ore. The study recommends that the European Union should instead use a technologically neutral CO2 calculation method when developing a green steel label. In addition, an EU standard should take into account the environmental and social costs of iron ore mining.
