Consumers granted right to repair

In future, manufacturers will also have to offer a repair for defective washing machines over and above the statutory warranty.

The European Parliament and member states have agreed: Manufacturers of smartphones, televisions or washing machines will be obliged to offer repair services. Governments are also expected to create financial incentives such as repair vouchers.

On Friday night, the Council and the EU Parliament reached an agreement on the Right to Repair Directive. The aim of the draft remains to enhance opportunities for repairing products within and beyond statutory warranties. However, the trilogue outcome entails changes regarding the scope, obligation to repair, content of the information form, and the online platform.
