Cohesion policy: Municipalities, business and social associations warn against centralization.

Recent EU cohesion funding supported the transition of regions affected by lignite coal phase-outs.

Several leading municipal associations, as well as social and business organizations, have issued a warning against the centralization of cohesion policy at the expense of local governments and regions. In a letter to Elisabeth Kaiser, the German government’s Commissioner for Eastern Germany, they write: „To strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and resilience in a successful and lasting way, a reinforced and modernized cohesion policy based on shared management and decentralized implementation is essential.“
