The EU Commission wants to reduce bureaucracy, especially for smaller companies. In return, more companies are to benefit from exemptions for SMEs in the future, for example with regard to data protection. Critics say the initiative does not go far enough.

The Commission wants to relieve SMEs of regulatory requirements. To this end, the authority wants to extend the exemptions that currently apply to SMEs with up to 250 employees to slightly larger companies – so-called mid-caps. This would include companies with up to 500 employees, an annual turnover of no more than EUR 100 million, and a balance sheet total of no more than EUR 86 million.
